Actually, it was something I was taught in a math class years ago. Two Thousand Ten = 2010. Two Thousand and Ten = 2000.10. Maybe it’s more of a monetary phrase requirement, when having decimal places is expected. *shrug*

I would sort of agree with JoeinMI’s comments. However, I have not heard from any vernacular police. I would offer we changed pronunciation of the year 2000 to “two thousand” because “twenty zero” or “twenty oh oh” was confusing or stupid. “JoeinMI’s comments were essentially true prior to the year 2000. I would further suggest our pronunciation of the year post 1999, was influenced by the movie “2001: A Space Odyssey”… You never heard the movie referred to as “twenty and one, A Space Odyssey”… IMHO.
I think our pronunciation of the year is governed more by what is the easiest to say (e.g. lazy) with the least of confusion.

PS: Mathematically speaking, “JoeinMI’s” last statement doesn’t make sense… unless he is referring to high tech’s version-speak.

It’s twenty-ten. Look at 1991. You don’t say “One thousand nine hundred ninety-nine”? No, you say “Nineteen ninety-nine”.

Two thousand ten isn’t bad, but the poor people living in Two thousand three hundred fifty-seven.

(And I’d argue that Two thousand and ten = 2000.10)
