So that tat is coming along nicely!  I finished the shading this past Friday.

Flexing the ink

Latest look.

The red is not color but irritation from the needle.  That will eventually fade into gray shading.  The bands are now officially done.  Next on the agenda is color!  And I still haven’t ironed’em out yet.  I leaning heavily toward blue and red in the big one but haven’t decided the two smaller ones.  I’m thinking of green for sure but the rest is a guess at the moment.  Yellow and orange are not my favorite colors and they don’t really show up well in tattoos.  Purple is an idea but it tends to be very dark and blends too much with black.  You can see from my back tattoo (below) the dangers of putting like colors too close together.

Basically, I want the colors to really stand out.  Luke suggested I get some magic markers and play around with colors until I find what I like.  A good idea.  Of course, there are also shades of colors vs primaries too.  I could do shades of blue and red on each one.  The wheels are turning…suggestions?

Shading done

Ok, I couldn’t help showing off one more pic.  I totally love it!  The idea of what I wanted is slowly coming to life and I can’t wait for the final product.   I have a sneaky suspicion I’ll be adding more to it though.  The inside shoulder looks a tad bare and begs for either another strand or something to compliment the strand look.  The inside I’m not overly worried about as you almost never see it (and it hurts like a bitch to ink).

So whaddya think?

  1. Very cool – I think it’s fun to think about “the next big move” and make a plan and follow through. I like to read about your thinking as you get this tattoo.

    @Steve ~ Thanks bud.

  2. Tattoo? There’s a tattoo? I was distracted….

    Seriously, I can’t wait to see the finished product!

    @RG ~ flirt!

  3. So, do you think they’d give me a reduction in the price of the same ink??? I mean, my arm is about half the size of yours….it would only take half the time and half the ink. We were just talking about you in NY at a friend’s house this last week….. were your ears burning

    @ALewis ~ It seems to be going around. At least yours was good. 🙂

  4. It does look so fucking good already, I can’t wait to see how it comes up coloured. I’m not going to weigh in on that debate though, although the magic marker idea is a great way to work out what you like the look of, maybe you could post some pics of that to see what people like the look of?

  5. I don’t think I can suggest a color schema until I figure out what protein the mRNA transcribed from the DNA there is going to synthesize.

  6. Well, I don’t know. I don’t want to be a dissenting voice, but I kinda think the black and various shades of grey are more artistically appealing than putting in a lot of color. It’s your arm, of course, but sometimes less is more.

  7. I second the mutant’s comment!…Play with colors first as you already have color on ya…Hey any more tattoos we should know about?

  8. I absolutely LOVE that tat! With the shading on the bands now, it’s all the more awesome. As for color, I don’t know. I like the idea of playing with markers. (It is always a good idea to play with markers, IMHO, but that’s the little kid in me.)
    It’s hard to tell on my monitor (or perhaps it’s my tired old eyes) but are the bands just black ink? To me it looks slightly brownish-bronze. That might be some of the skin irritation red showing through, but I like that color. Almost like sepia instead of black/white. That’s a color idea to consider.
    But really it’s a beautiful tattoo. So fine!

  9. honestly, i’m having such impure thoughts over your pics i can’t even conjure a cohesive thought about your cool tatoo…I’m just saying…

  10. Well..while it KILLS me to agree with BrettCajun, I guess I’ll have to. Less color. More black and grey. Black and grey is SO much sexier than color.
