15 years to life in S.F. dog maul death

It only took 7 years for the verdict to be reached. This dog attack was beyond despicable. It was also one of the most horrific animal attacks I’ve ever been privy to. There are things I am bound not to reveal due to rules that govern my employment. I can say she (and her husband) got off lucky. I shudder to think how much easier it might have been for them both to get off scott-free in other parts of the country. I am personally glad this person will do extended prison time but I feel it is a slap on the wrist compared to what she (and her husband) should have received.

I grew up on a farm and I love animals. I currently don’t own pets because I am not home enough and I would never allow an animal to go neglected. Leaving an animal home alone for hours (sometimes days) at a time is cruel. But, I digress. I would never, and I say NEVER, own such an aggressive dog in a City environment. Dogs are not children but the effort and control involved is similar in many aspects. Large dogs, especially naturally aggressive ones, need a lot of love, attention, and control. If trained properly it is not an overly tasking skill. When left on their own or antagonized, they become even more aggressive. As an FYI, you are solely responsible if your animal attacks a human being. [1]Yes, there are exceptions based on circumstances.

The sad reality is many people who own animals do not take personal responsibility for their animals. And, it is the animal and other helpless victims who end up suffering.

  1. “leaving an animal home alone for hours at a time is cruel”…hmmmm.

we will have to agree to disagree on that one.

my dog (who is now 11) has stayed home for many years from the time i left for work (8am usually) until the time i got home (somewhere between 7 and 9pm). he has never peed or pooped in the house. he is a happy, well-adjusted dog. loves everyone and everything. he doesn’t bite, he doesn’t bark, he’s a great cuddler. amazingly, he is a dalmatian and everyone who has met him has said they have never seen a dal so chilled out and happy.

so…if he is neglected by the standards of being left home alone alot…he’s the most well-adjusted neglected there is : )

(and i got him from the animal shelter…where…if i really think about it…he has been so much better off in a loving home with a dad who loves the hell outta him, rather than put to sleep).

  2. Was this the one where the landlords’ rottweiller attacked a lesbian couple who were tenants and one of them died from the attack?

  3. I am so glad this has happened. The incident occurred right before I left SF and I was horrified at the possibility that they’d walk.

  4. Moby: At first I thought the prison term was too long. But you are correct; the owners of those dogs should have not kept them in an apt. building.

  5. There is an aspect of this tragedy which I’m surprised hasn’t been highlighted. The fact that the victim is gay while the dogs’ owner are straight may explain their indifference during the attack and also hints at their opinion of Whipple’s orientation. I wonder why the prosecution hasn’t considered the possibility that this was premeditated, hence a hate crime.

@Chweebus ~ I absolutely agree with you however, my reading shows there was not enough hard evidence to approach it from this angle.

  6. Lord! I remember when that story hit, and I saw the pic of that mega cave troll marjorie knoller, I said “oh shit! that’s the nutjob slat who’s always haunting the legal library!”
I used to work at a large downtown SF law firm until 2000, and my office was right next to the legal library. The ugly troll used to stare at me all the time in a most uncomfortable fashion, like she was undressing me with her eyes. I took her for a freak spinster from the paralegal dept.
glad she’s finally getting reamed. she should be burned at the stake and buried head first.

  7. As the owner of two big dogs I find that it is always the case that, mean people have mean dogs. My two are very loving as am I. They are my world and have brought me so much. I thank them for sharing their lives with me.
