Comments Broken

So I got word this morning comments on the blog are broken. I’m working on it.

Stupid me, the new version defaulted to requiring users to be logged in to comment. Ooops! Should be all fixed now.

I lost a huge chunk of my categories (again). However, this time they didn’t disappear all together. I’m hoping with the new database tweaks in this version of WordPress, I won’t have to worry about it again. I’ve updated the categories back thru the beginning of the year so far. Everything else, meh….

Geek Out

I had a chance to use the Amazon Kindle the other day and I was pleasantly surprised. [1]I was reminded after writing a commentary on one of the geek sites I follow  The "e-ink" or display was amazing.  It was better than reading print as the clarity was stunning.  There was no screen buzz or flicker that comes w/most electronic display devices, which often leads to eye strain.  The font size is adjustable too.  Surprisingly, there was no backlight feature either.  I sort of expect that however, after some thought, this makes sense.  A backlight can cause text to wash out at times for people w/poor eyesight.

Figuring out the features and function was pretty straight forward.  It was obvious considerable effort was put into usability.  However, the page forward/back buttons were a tad too convenient.  I kept bumping them every time I moved the device around.  I also found the overall feel of the device a bit clunky.  It was light but took some getting use to.  I expected the screen size to be bigger too.  The actual screen was probably about the same size as your average paperback.

The biggest downer is the price.  It was ridiculously over-priced.  Being a geek, there are some devices that I just consider a "must have" and will rush right out and buy.  Not so in this case.  It is more of a convenience than anything else.  I also think the average user won’t be a technophile like myself.  Hence, the price will be a big turn off to the book worm crowd.  I know for myself it will need come down in price significantly before I make the switch.  For power readers, it might sense however, I only read on average about 5-7 books a year.

I’m a big supporter of e-books as it will allow us to ween ourselves off our dependence on paper. [2]We are destroying our rainforests  Plus being able to carry 200 books around with you is pretty damn appealing.  Barring portability and flexibility issues on copies, I think overall the industry is off to a good start.

Update II

So the update to the blog went semi-successful.  Once again, a huge chunk of my categories went missing.  I’m hoping after this update it won’t happen again.  The other problem is my subdomains are currently defaulting to my root folder.

If you are loading blog.mobius.name or sfmoby.us you get bounced to my home page url.  I’m waiting for my ISP to fix the problem.  In the meantime, the full blog link www.mobius.name/blog/ is on the home page or you can load it manually.

Sorry for the confusion.

Get Over It Already

I know you are probably sick of hearing about my drama w/TFA but I’m still struggling w/my feelings so you get to suffer w/me.

We aren’t together anymore in the sense of dating however, we still see each other about as much if not more than we did before.  He and I both realize it just isn’t meant to be right now.

That said, every time we talk and share intimacy I find it hard to get my head into the proper perspective again.  I want more damn it.  I know I can’t have it and it is driving me fraking nuts.  I also can’t help wondering if that is what’s making me want him more.  I don’t like being denied.  At ALL!  I know, color your surprised right?  It is a character flaw I’ve been aware of for years. [1]Remind me to tell you that story one day.  Juicy but so not my best moment  So I find myself mulling over my feelings trying to decide is it true desire or just being denied that keeps throwing my id into chaos.

I don’t have an answer yet.  Like I said, I’m just kicking it around in my head trying to figure it out.

Update

I’m currently updating the blog. If it disappears for a bit, never fear, it will return.

Well, my FTP shell from my ISP is down so the update is on hold. I’ll try again later tonight.

Survivor

I survived the 4th at work.  The day started off very slow and ended in a blaze of drama.  The last two hours of my shift, I processed just over a 100 calls.  While most folks looks forward to holidays, there are a couple that I absolutely dread in my line of work.  New Year’s eve is always a total cluster fuck.  People are often just drunk and stupid.  The 4th of July comes in right behind that as a minor meltdown.  Not so much from the noise but from the increase in crime.  We also get a lot of false calls for gunfire.  We have to respond accordingly however, it takes services away from other areas.  On the other side of the coin, we also get a real increase in shootings and gun play.  Criminals know they have a higher chance of getting away w/stupidity on such nights.

People are always indignant from the noise which is a total surprise to me.  You know the holiday comes every year.  You know it is going to be noisy so why act so indignant?  I can understand frustration over noise however, have you ever heard of ear plugs?

As for me, The 4th of July has never been a big holiday.  Frank commented on twitter about holidays becoming less important as we age.   I agree to an extent.  As kids, I think every holiday is exciting.  As adults, we come to pick and choose the holidays that mean a lot to us.  For me, the holiday itself isn’t as important as being w/friends and loved ones.

Anyway, I was a total slug today.  The one bright spot was my roomie’s guest made us a very delicious pasta for lunch.  hehehe.

Grumble Grumble

I got bumped off my shift and my days off for the mid-year sign up. I had already planned to go back to a 5-8 schedule however, I fully expected to get a full weekend slot. After 7 1/2 years, I have the seniority for it. That is until some nitwit supervisor convinced the not-so-bright powers that be to drastically alter the shift allotment. This created a cascading bump all the way down the list.

I’m extremely lucky to have pulled a Fri/Sat slot on my shift. I got it only because the person before me decided at the last minute to go days.

I was rather annoyed at first however, it is beyond my control so I let it go. I still have a partial weekend slot so it really isn’t that bad. And because of delays in the signup, it will only be for 4 1/2 months instead of 6.

That said, I can’t wait to go back to a 5-8 shift. I am so tired of rushing everywhere during the week just to get stuff done.

If I ever decide to go back t a 4/10 shift, PLEASE stop me! Or at least remind me how much I hated it this last time.

That is all! lol

Blog Update

So after careful consideration, I added a new blog domain and email address today.  Don’t worry, the old one will continue to work however, I get rather annoyed that my email addresses w/the .name extension routinely get flagged by junk mail filters.  I’ll get emails days, weeks, even months later sometimes from folks who stumble over my emails in their junk email folders.

If you care, roll your mouse over the globe icon in the bottom left column here.  You’ll see the new email addy pop up in the very bottom left of the browser window itself.  The new domain is www.sfmoby.us

Feel free to use it or not.  Like I said the old blog domain will remain.  I checked a few links and most of the internal referral links work using the new domain as well.  If you notice any broken ones, feel free to comment or email.

Vid Bid 08

Well, my first new video of the year. I was originally just tinkering w/the camera trying to get it to work and it turned into a full blown vid. Its roughly about 12megs and does take a few seconds to load. As usual, no shirt on. I swear I don’t plan it that way.

Neglectful

I’ve been awful about emailing new registered users on the blog. Sorry ’bout that, I’ve been busy.

If you recently registered expect an email from me this week confirming 1) your request and 2) you are not a bot.
