Scifi! II

Arrgggh! It’s been a busy week. It’s my Friday night and I’m catching up on the tivo shows.

Has anyone else been watching the release of the new Doctor Who series on scifi? It’s starting off pretty good. I wasn’t to keen on the first episode but the rest have been excellent. I’ve been having scifi withdrawals w/my regular shows being in the off season right now. It might just work out. hehehe.

Old Journals – 4.19.98

Ok, I’ve gotten a bit behind on my old journal posts. I plead for your mercy. I’ve been a very busy boy. This entry is significantly later on as I got distracted (yeah there’s a surprise) from my journaling.

In this enty, I find myself back in Houston and very happy about it at the time. I’d struggled very hard to make enough money to move as well as buy a car. Probably not the smartest move but it was very symbolic for me. A friend who managed the local bathouse gave me a job working the counter and catering the bbq’s on weekends. My thoughts were still very chaotic and my goals pretty much non-existent. I think I was still hoping for something to just fall it in my lap and make it all better. And while I was still missing the bigger picture, every time I sat down to journal a few more things would come into focus. All was not lost. . .

4.19.98
Well it’s been a very long time since I’ve written in this thing. I haven’t been keeping up like wanted but here I am again making the effort. I have come to a decision. I have no self-control when it comes to choosing what I want to do vs what I need/should be doing. That is something I need to work on a lot!

I’m back in Houston! I am so happy to be back. Even though I’m not working yet, I am still glad to be home. I’ve so missed all of my friends. However, as I feared, I’ve fallen back into alot of my old habits again. I’m trying though. I think I’ve made some very important realizations about myself. Now, I just need to work on the changes. I’ve started studing HTML alot. I need to study even harder if I want to learn it thoroughly. I’m getting concepts down right now and then I want to work on actual application next. I need to have a focus to help increase my self-control. I have no control sometimes when I should. I will work on it.

Body by Moby

Ok, the title was cheesy but hey, cut me some slack. I’m sleep-deprived.

In an effort to keep my promise, I’m starting out w/some very generic helpful advice for first timers in the realm of working out.

Really simple axioms to remember.

1) To lose weight – you must burn more calories than you consume.

2) To build muscle – you must push some sort of heavy weight.

3) Have realistic expectations – body/muscle development is not an over-night process.

If you are truly interested in changing your outward appearance then you need to make changes in your life. My belief is most folks fail because they 1) go overboard and burn out quickly, 2) have very unrealistic expectations or 3) don’t think or follow it thru.

Tidbits II

Thanks for the well-wishes and concerns on the new bike. I’m slowly breaking it in. I went for a ride last night. In a word, SWEET! I had sold my scooter but the guy backed out. No biggie, it’s paid for and I have the space.

As for the safety issues, yeah there is that. However, as Joe pointed out a lot of guys get bikes to increase the perception of coolness, manhood or likability. Not so in my case. I could care less really. I upgraded for a variety of reasons but the biggies were based on practicality.

  • 1) While the scooter was great for tooling around the city, I had a really hard time w/it during rain or poor weather days. It is so light that any rain makes it very dangerous to slide around on the street.
  • 2) I can afford a car but don’t want the hassles of parking, storage, fees, etc. I have a garage space so storage isn’t bad however, parking is simplistic w/a bike. Fees even less hassle.
  • 3) I’m no longer citybound. I can actually get on the freeway and drive over the bridge. While not a primary factor it is nice to have the added mobility.

Surprise!!!!

OMG! I be done lost my ever love’n mind.

Lookie lookie what Moby got.

Blue Booo!

Blue Booo!

Better pics to come once I am not so crunched for time. My buddy kristaki from work went w/me. Afterwards, we were starving. And I didn’t wanna ride it too long till I get my insurance converted over.

We were both surprised how fast it went. I had planned to just go by and look at it. However, the guy offered me 5.9% on the interest so I couldn’t say no. Fast forward 30 minutes later and kristaki is watching me lurch up/down the block getting used to the clutch. (My scooter is one gear w/no clutch. It’s been a while since I’ve been on a bike.)

Del.icio.us

I would say “geek alert” however, I’d like some feedback on this particular post.

I’ve been hearing about the social bookmarking site del.icio.us for some time now. I decided to check it out today. Not bad. It’s sort of like friendster, tribe, and myspace except you share bookmarks instead of self-profiles. Any computer, phone, pda, etc w/net access I can log in and see my bookmarks. Of course, this ties in nicely w/my desire to make the web my portal of online activities.

With del.icio.us I have the choice of listing my tags or my actual bookmarks. I’m just starting so my tag list is minimal at best. I’ve also only added a few bookmarks for now. My question is how many people prefer seeing a list of my tags or the actual bookmarks?

Busy Bee III

No rest for the wicked. I’m off but not such luck on actually being free. *sigh* I miss having a life. (Wait, did I ever have one?…*pondering*)

I’m off to work to bend fresh minds to my iron will. The current class has finished their first rotation and today is their one day classroom training session before starting 2nd rotation. Out of 18 there are 9 left. Sadly, that’s better than most. The remaining group is doing well though.

Tomorrow, I’m headed over to City College to help my previous instructor w/his new EMT class. They are coming toward the end of the semester and doing much more hands on.

Wednesday, I have to go in early (7:00am) as I’m learning the new dynamic deployment for fire side. (I’m not exactly a morning person so I’m sure I’ll be extra cranky that day.) We are switching to a new type of dispatching for medics in the city. Instead of placing them at fire stations they will be roaming. We will use an AVL (automatically verifiy location) system to deploy medics for emergency calls. Basically, it just means we’ll have more tools to do our job effectively. Not any new skills but more attention is required now. The current system is sloppy at best. After a week of training, I hit the floor. One of the perks might be better days off for awhile. I might end up w/a weekend day or two off thru the month of April.

Muscle Head

Switching gears in a major way, one of my regular readers emailed me recently asking for advice on working out. First, an apology for not getting to it sooner. However, Sir Moby has a very full plate right now and long winded rants are harder to come by. And we all know I love yacking.

So in the coming week, I’ll be adding a dedicated section on tips/tricks for working out. Over the years, I’ve gleaned tons of information about working out. Do’s and Don’ts as well as helpful insights. I was a personal trainer ages ago while living in the seaport town of Galveston, TX. Back when I was a wee lad. And I’m not refering to age even though I was very young. No back when I was no bigger than a beanstalk. And while I am no longer a personal trainer, working out and health in general has become a huge part of my life. I still keep up w/the field and the ever advancing knowledge behind it.

Most of what I offer will be for beginners/novices and will branch into diet, health, routines, etc. I will cover more advanced stuff but I feel most folks are always looking for advice on 1) how to get started 2) how to maintain or 3) how to get back into it. And if it works for you great, if not well the hell with ya then. *wink*

Stick & Stones Will . . .

I thought I’d talk about something other than myself today. Yeah, I know, there’s a first.

I do keep up my blogroll even though I get behind at times. Some more than others but I usually make it to all about once a week. Lately though, I’ve been reading Steve from Bent Collective a lot. If you aren’t a heavy reader of Bent, you should be. Here you have a man in the prime of his life giving of himself to help others. He traveled half way around the world to the bodunk country of Uzbekistan, easily a third world country, to setup a clinic and care for the ravaged HIV population there. Uzbekistan is only 2 small countries away from Afghanistan. They don’t particularly like us. Of course, being so far away does present some technological issues. Enter his friend Al who often keeps us apprised of Steve’s lastest efforts via the blog.
