Finally!

I finally finished back categorizing all my posts. [1]Well 1 or 2 might have slipped thru but I can’t be bothered to worry. I didn’t actually lose as many as I had thought in the last upgrade. I also discovered a few posts were saved but never published. If you are a subscriber and get weird emails from me for posts from years ago, feel free to ignore.

I think I figured out the problem w/my categories. Somehow I had not one but two database tables for categories. *closed eyes* I nixed one. *peeking thru one eye* So far so good.

So far I’m liking the newer version of WordPress. The user interface seems a tad faster. The layout is a bit different but overall nice. It does takes a little getting used to. After the drama I went thru during my last upgraded, I decided to wait a while before I trying again. I’d never had any trouble before and to be honest I think the error was on my part. Regardless, I’m back up to par.

I guess I get to keep my geek card now.

Geek Out

I had a chance to use the Amazon Kindle the other day and I was pleasantly surprised. [1]I was reminded after writing a commentary on one of the geek sites I follow  The "e-ink" or display was amazing.  It was better than reading print as the clarity was stunning.  There was no screen buzz or flicker that comes w/most electronic display devices, which often leads to eye strain.  The font size is adjustable too.  Surprisingly, there was no backlight feature either.  I sort of expect that however, after some thought, this makes sense.  A backlight can cause text to wash out at times for people w/poor eyesight.

Figuring out the features and function was pretty straight forward.  It was obvious considerable effort was put into usability.  However, the page forward/back buttons were a tad too convenient.  I kept bumping them every time I moved the device around.  I also found the overall feel of the device a bit clunky.  It was light but took some getting use to.  I expected the screen size to be bigger too.  The actual screen was probably about the same size as your average paperback.

The biggest downer is the price.  It was ridiculously over-priced.  Being a geek, there are some devices that I just consider a "must have" and will rush right out and buy.  Not so in this case.  It is more of a convenience than anything else.  I also think the average user won’t be a technophile like myself.  Hence, the price will be a big turn off to the book worm crowd.  I know for myself it will need come down in price significantly before I make the switch.  For power readers, it might sense however, I only read on average about 5-7 books a year.

I’m a big supporter of e-books as it will allow us to ween ourselves off our dependence on paper. [2]We are destroying our rainforests  Plus being able to carry 200 books around with you is pretty damn appealing.  Barring portability and flexibility issues on copies, I think overall the industry is off to a good start.

Update II

So the update to the blog went semi-successful.  Once again, a huge chunk of my categories went missing.  I’m hoping after this update it won’t happen again.  The other problem is my subdomains are currently defaulting to my root folder.

If you are loading blog.mobius.name or sfmoby.us you get bounced to my home page url.  I’m waiting for my ISP to fix the problem.  In the meantime, the full blog link www.mobius.name/blog/ is on the home page or you can load it manually.

Sorry for the confusion.

Update

I’m currently updating the blog. If it disappears for a bit, never fear, it will return.

Well, my FTP shell from my ISP is down so the update is on hold. I’ll try again later tonight.

Hack

Someone has repeatedly been trying to hack my calendar site.  I got a notice from my ISP a couple months back regarding an intrusion attempt on my calendar’s RSS feed.  I disabled that.  Today, I discovered a new ics file loaded into my calendar directory.  It was incorrectly formatted so the program wouldn’t run it.  However, a quick perusal of the base file showed a redirect command.  I googled the redirect site and it came back as a trojan.

Annoyed with the apparent software vulnerabilities, I nixed the entire program.  I did export my data file into Gcal (google’s version) beforehand.  As fates would have it, there is a nifty plug in for Thunderbird that lets me update and modify the Gcal version just as easily as I did my original.

Not than anyone really cares about my schedule…

I decided I would randomly post pics from flickr just for shits and grins. I took this one a while back at the old Sutro baths here. I have no idea what the latin inscription means or even if it is real.

Weekend In Review IV

What did I do this weekend? [1]besides being a pig.   I ended up playing Uno w/Brettcajun on the Xbox.  I can advise Brett is just as competitive at playing Uno as is at tennis. lol  He was determined to play till he got a couple wins under his belt.  He did finally.  I introduced him to a couple of my XBL [2]Xbox Live buddies.  One, from the UK and one from Boston.  It was fun.  I love Uno and playing with friends is even better.  Most of all, I loved watching Brett squirm.  I also knocked off a few games w/my buddy kristaki.  He got served on Call of Duty 4.  heehee

I also caught up on a lot of Tivo. [3]Oh yes, I was very productive  New stuff, I had 5 Battlestar Galactica, 3 Dr Who, and 5 South Park episodes.  Reruns, I had 5 ST: Voyager and 4 Stargate: Atlantis episodes.  BG is good but a bit extreme if you ask me.  They are really trying to go out with a bang.  Dr Who is constantly evolving.  I don’t like the new sidekick as much but she is growing on me.  I hope they bring Rose back.  South Park was, well South Park. lol

I was a dirty pig more than a few times to say the least.  Details forthcoming.

TFA isn’t feeling so well this week.  He had a crown replaced and had some severe pain afterwards.  Of course, the dentist office was closed over the weekend.  I felt so bad for him having to fly all over creation with a sore tooth.  Seems he is a bit better today if not a little worn out.  He always teases me because I always say my weekends are "uneventful".  lol

Oh, I also moved all my pics over from picasa to flickrflickr has become just so damn handy, I couldn’t resist.  I inadvertently left some safety settings open though and got an stern scolding email.  Ooops.  All the tweaking, sorting, and labeling was a bit tedious but would been regardless of what I was using.  I didn’t realize how many damn pics I had to sort thru.  I’ve only uploaded a fraction so far.  Overall, I’m happy w/flickr but I still don’t like the idea of someone else controlling my data.  I can always delete’em if I don’t like it.

Tomorrow, I have to be up at daylight thirty as I’m teaching again this week.  Thankfully, I had a hard ass workout today and feeling a bit sleepy.  I’m still gonna be dead on my feet come 1700 hours.  Oy!

Confuscious Say…

My little post yesterday set off a shit storm of emails.  Sorry, I forget sometimes my reader base is constantly changing.

The long term readers knew what I meant however, I got a ton of confused emails over the NSFW post.  Yes, I restrict the more explicit parts of blog. [1]There is more explicit? Yes, a shocker huh?  Mainly, as family and coworkers sometimes stumble over it.  Frankly, I don’t care to share my exploits with them.

If you care to see such things, you have to register NOT subscribe.  Subscribing just shoots you an email when I update.  Once, you’ve introduced yourself, I’m happy to boost your access level.  Click the lower left link marked "login/register".

Be warned, your universal WordPress login will not work (yet).  I’m looking at some plugins that might change that.  However, you can recreate the same user/password to keep it simple.  I know, "God, what a hassle" right?  Well them’s the breaks, suck it up if you want access to the nitty gritty. *g*

So there you have it.  The grand scheme revealed.  Nothing so exciting as many of you inquired.  Just a modicum of restriction.  No, I’m not doing porn. [2]that one made me laugh No, I’m not ashamed, I’m just not stupid.  No, I’m not telling hidden stories about other bloggers. [3]Good lord, some of you need to get out more.

Again, sorry for the confusion.  In my defense, I am 37 now.  They say the memory is first to go.  (shaddup Brett)

Random Smandom VI

Nothing to see here, move along. *g*

Analytics: My blog traffic has slowed to a measly 5 thousand hits a month now.  Guess my absence as of late is showing.  I’m still solidly a "referral blog".  Meaning?  Most folks who find me do so thru another blog vs just random search engine queries.  Large Tony is still the leader in referrals.  Twice the number as anyone else.  brettcajun is holding a respectable second place like a trooper.  And a surprise, Durban bud is bringing up the rear. [1]as he tends to do.  *EG*

Did you know if you put 4 lesbians together in one sitting they will share their most intimate medical history out loud?  My ears are still burning.

It was HOT here yesterday.  Today is a bearable 63 degrees out.  Hot weather makes me frisky.  Oy!

*

I finished Call of Duty 4.  I was reluctant to play at first however, it is a decent game.  I still have an issue w/playing games where humans are killing each other.  However, I am an adult and I KNOW the difference.  The online matches are great if you like XBL. [2]Xbox live

I’ve been good about hitting the gym.  I decided to work on bulk the first 3 months and leaning out the last 3 months.  I a little proud of how often I’ve been going.  I tend to be a slacker on weekends but not lately.  People are noticing so I must be doing something right.

*

I’ve been hiding the daily journal entries as I figured they were boring everyone.  I got several inquires as to why I wasn’t doing them anymore.  Ok, ok, I’ll leave them open.  I will be kind enough to turn off the subscribe notification thingy so you don’t get bombarded.

I think I corrupted my blog database.  My posts are acting erratic.  One from last night just showed up and another is MIA completely.

Twitter Twatter

Pat & Moby

I got to meet my 3rd twitter contact today. He was also my first overseas guest. Patireland from Ireland was in town for business. We hung out over dinner and then coffee. Charming fellow and it was an enjoyable meeting. We had a great conversation about the use of twitter, Facebook and other online social sites.

Sadly, he had to see me act in my work capacity. [1]An 800 was harassing the employee at the Starbucks. A quickie phone call to work took care of that.

All in all, a great first meeting.
